McCombs Business School - UT Austin

by knewbee » Sat Aug 29, 2009 12:54 pm
My profile is as follows:
GMAT: 750 (Q50 V42)
GPA: 3.7 (University of Delhi, India)
Work Experience: 5.5 years in top tier Indian IT company (same old Indian software engineer - but female)
Extra-c: College level debator, editor of office magazine, part of my school/college/office music band, volunteer with American Red Cross. Have worked in India for 4 years and now in USA for the last 1.5 years.

I wish to apply to UT Austin's McCombs Business school. Do you think I stand a chance of admission with financial aid?

Is there anything specific that I need to project to the admissions committee when I apply?

Please give me some of your expert advice!

Thanks.

Dear knewbee,

Your profile is certainly competitive for McCombs and your work experience in the US will be an asset for you. As with any applicant, it is important to present a strong overall application. You want to convey your rationale for going to business school and why you think the McCombs school is the right place for you. Likewise, you want to distinguish yourself from the competition in a positive way, so use your unique personal experiences to your advantage.

With regards to financial aid, that is tougher to get than admission. So, you should not expect it, but receiving a small scholarship is not an impossibility either.

Good luck,
Lisa

Need your insight on my profile

I am an Indian IT Male with a very diverse work Experience.
I work as a Senior Manager, with multifaceted exposure at various levels.

Work Ex: 10 Years in a Tech Company in US
of which 6 Years are in Big 5 Consulting experience.
Education Level: Masters with 3.11 GPA (10 yrs ago)
Good Extra Curriculars: Leadership in sports, organized events, Tied up with a charitable institution. Started Educational and fitness group activities, Mentored multiple individuals, Volunteer activities.

Now the sad part:
GMAT: 560, AWA: 5.5, V: 50%ile, Q: 73%ile
This is by far the lowest I got. Never scored below 650 in my mock tests including GMATPrep.

Being a bit realistic, I am interested in :
Kenan-Flaglar (Exec)
Texas McCombs (Exec/Part Time)
Cox SMU (Part Time)

Any chance I can make it to any of these with my existing GMAT score ?

I have some keen deliverables work wise which is delaying my next GMAT attempt, hopefully I will do it before the end of Nov 09.

Please advise and pour in your thoughts.
Appreciate your help.
