Assumption CR...

by [email protected] » Sat Mar 03, 2012 8:47 pm
"6. The workers at Bell Manufacturing will shortly go on strike unless the management increases their wages. As Bell's president is well aware, however, in order to increase the worker's wages, Bell would have to sell off some of its subsidiaries. So, some of Bell's subsidiaries will be sold.

The conclusion above is properly drawn if which one of the following is assumed?
(A) Bell Manufacturing will begin to suffer increased losses.

(B) Bell's management will refuse to increase its worker's wages.

(C) The workers at Bell Manufacturing will not be going on strike.

(D) Bell's president has the authority to offer the workers their desired wage increase.

(E) Bell's workers will not accept a package of improved benefits in place of their desired wage increase.
"

OA is C. I chose D but got it wrong...

(C) The workers at Bell Manufacturing will not be going on strike.
--> If we say workers will go on strike it would mean even by selling out the subsidiaries strike will happen hence the conclusion doesnt stand.
If workers dont go on strike it means conclusion stands. Hence CORRECT.

(D) Bell's president has the authority to offer the workers their desired wage increase.
--> by the argument we only know that president is aware that "Bell would have to sell off some of its subsidiaries". We cant assume if he has the authority. Even if he dont have the authority bell is going to sell subsidiaries anyway, so it doesnt affects the conclusion.

Why not A, if the subsidiaries are sold, it will increase the losses ?!!

I don't see C to be a candidate.
Please help.

The conclusion above is properly drawn if which one of the following is assumed?

(A) Bell Manufacturing will begin to suffer increased losses.

What if losses increase, it doesnt affect the conclusion in anyway, argument is linked with wages and sold of subsidiaries, whether they are at loss, conclusion stands the same. So A is not assumed for conclusion to stand.
