The coyote is one of several recent

The coyote is one of several recent ecological success stories: along with the
white-tailed deer, the moose, and other species that are enlarging their natural
domains, they have established themselves as supreme adapters in an era when the
capability
to adjust to the environmental changes wrought by human beings has
created a whole new class of dominant large mammals.
A. they have established themselves as supreme adapters in an era when the
capability
B. they have established themselves as being supreme adapters in an era when
being able
C. it has established itself as a supreme adapter in an era when to be able
D. it has established itself as being a supreme adapter in an era when its ability
E. it has established itself as a supreme adapter in an era when the ability
Answer:C/E
They is wrong usage. 'It' should be used to denote coyote

Therefore A and B wrong

D is wrong due to use of being

when to be able is wrong in C

therefore ans - E

Hi Shobha,
D is having couples of issues:
it has established itself as being a supreme adapter in an era when its ability

As always being is having issue as long as other options are good.

It is not about the issue of The Coyote as indicated by its capability, it is in general in meaning as obvious from given info. i.e the ability to adjust to the environmental changes wrought by human beings has created a whole new class of dominant large mammals.

It is not necessarily the Coyote ability...

IMO E.

A & B - THEY is a wrong pronoun
D - AS BEING is wordy and unnecessary.
Between C and E, I negate C because "when the ability" is better than "when to be able".

But if someone could explain why D and C are wrong grammatically, it would be great!!

checking grammar, we sort out A and B soon.

D has "as being" and "its ability is not logic.

C is wrong because

"to be able" or to do is never a subject in a sentence on gmat land. gmat permits only one case which is "to do is to do". in this case "to do" can be a subject.

A "They have" should be "it has," as "along with" does not create a compound plural subject (whereas "and" does).
B "They have" is problematic as noted in A, plus, double "being" is unnecessary.
C "When to be able" is awkward, confusing, and stylistically poor.
D "Being" is unnecessary and "its ability" should be "the ability."
