og problem#13

by Gurpinder » Thu Jul 15, 2010 10:44 am
a surge in new home sales and a drop in weekly unemployement claims suggest that the economy might not be as weak as some analysts previously thought.

(A) keep it the way it is.
(B) claims suggests that the economy might not be so weak as some analysts have previously thought
(C) claims suggest that the economy might not be as weak as have been previously thought by some analysts
(D) claims, suggesting about the economy that it might not be so weak as previously thought by some analysts
(E) claims, suggesting the economy might not be as weak as previously thought to be by some analysts

i narrowed it down to 2 choices, but made a mistake afterward.

can you explain why (A) is a better answer than (C).

Is there any chance of including choices B, D, and E, just for the heck of it? :D

Thanks, Gurpinder. IMO, the answer is 'A' because, in choice 'C', economy is singular, and have been... is for modifying something in the plural.

I agree with tomada.

Personally, I compare the relevant choices together and identify the differences. Often times there are slight differences.

Another way to catch the error with C is analyzing the idiom "as weak as". Usually this is used "as weak as noun" not "as weak as has/have"

Just adding my two cents. :D
