let x be the cost of the two shares

0.80x = 96
x=120
loss=120-96=24

1.20x = 96
x=80
profit=96-80=16

24-16 = loss of $8

IMO C

Let the purchase price of the share on which a profit was earned = x
the purchase price of the share on which a loss was suffered = y

x+20%x = 96
1.2x = 96
x = 80

y-20%y = 96
0.8y = 96
y = 120

X=80 profit = 96-80=16

Y=120 loss = 96-120 = -24

Hence overall gain = 16+(-24) = loss of $8
