jumping genes

More than 30 years ago Dr. Barbara Clintock, the Nobel Prize winner, reported that genes can "jump", as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another.

A.
B. like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another
C. as pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to another
D. like pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to another
E. as do pearls that move mysteriously from one necklace to some other one

How do we know the difference between "like " and "as"???

jump like pearls, or jump as pearls :(

IMO A

it would be genes jump as pearls moving .......

Like is used to compare nouns

as is used to compare clauses

Choice B seems to be the best for this question

I think here we are comparing genes to pearl, so like should be used to compare nouns.

also, if we use 'as' to compare- genes can jump as pearl can move, It sounds awkward because pearls cannot practically move. So comparison here is between Genes and Pearl.
