It seems likely that a number of astronomical phenomena, such as the formation of planetary nebulas, may be caused by the interaction where two starts orbit each other at close range.
(A) may be caused by interaction where two stars orbit each other
(B) may be caused by the interaction between two stars that each orbit the other
(C) are because of the interaction between two stars that orbit each other
(D) are caused by the interaction of two stars where each is orbiting the other
(E) are caused by the interaction of two stars orbiting each other

can you explain why each sentence is wrong?
except for the right answer...

I think the answer is B....

Subject, "a number" is singular so the selection must begin with a singular verb "may". Eliminate C, D and E

Answer B is longer than A but A contains "where" and "where" needs to refer to locations on the GMAT.

Therefore, the answer is B... Please can you confirm the OA?

"a number" is plural
"the number" would be singular
For A and B, "may be" is redundant b/c likely is used in the beginning of the sentence

"E" IMO
