Plan to have 2-3 months to study for the test, if you plan to prep on your own. It's recommended that you give yourself enough time to take the GMAT at least two times prior to submitting your first application.

If you are planning to apply R1 in the fall, I think that April/May would be a good time to take the test. If you feel like you need to retake, you can do so around June/July.

Just my two cents--best of luck!

Agree - from start to finish, plan about 4-5 months, just in case you need to take it multiple times. (You have to wait 31 days before you can retake the test.)

Applications are usually released in August, so just try to have the test done (including retakes, if necessary) before then.
