Need 650 in 3 months

Hello all ,
I am thinking of attempting GMAT for the first time this February and is petrified even before I started preparation.I need to get in to the IMBA program @ Schulich and without a 650 I do not think they will even look at my application :(

1.Please suggest some study guides (btw is Winners better than the other ones considering the degree of difficulty of recent GMAT questions ?)
2.I am so-so in my Maths skills , ok in English .

3. do I really have to attend prep classes ? Can not afford a tuitor and have a little kid (so not much free time)

Hi,

Welcome to the community!

To start, you may go through the self-study forum, see the study plans and decide which is right for you. When are you planning to give the exam? Normally, 2 - 3 months is a good study plan but it depends on your availability for studying GMAT. Full-time employees find it hard to study within 2 months normally.

Also, take a diagnostic test and see where you are. You may either download GMATPrep from mba.com or take diagnostic tests in Official Guide 12.

1. OG 12 and its supplements are the must to have. For Math concept study, I would suggest MGMAT 5 quant guides. For verbal, there are plenty to recommend. To name a few, MGMAT SC guide 4th edition/e-gmat.com/Aristotle SC Grail (For Sentence Correction), Powerscore CR bible/VeritasPrep CR (For Critical Reasoning). Just go through the forum 'I just beat the GMAT' and understand more about the resources that people have reviewed.

I am not sure whether you meant 'Winners' as the Winner's guides that are sold online. I have tried their SC book and I am not very happy with the resource.

2. People normally get deceived by their own personal opinion on how good they are in a subject and GMAT can definitely fool anybody. Best way to judge yourself is to take a diagnostic test and you'll get a fairly good idea on where you're good and where you're weak. Plan your course of study based on the analysis.

3. Can you study by yourself or will you study only in classrooms? Unfortunately we cannot answer. :)

Just took my third practice GMAT exam published by GMAC and have been hovering over the 650 Score. So I thought I give you an idea on what I have done so far.

For the verbal section SC is by far the hardest section for most test takers. The reason is if you do not know the proper rules to disect the senteces not only are they impossible to solve but also extremely time consuming. This is time you can afford to the more analytical sections like Critical Reasoning and Reading Comp. On the other hand, if you know the rules you can pick up time dramatically by completing medium to medium hard SC questions between 1:00-1:30. This will save you a lot of time. I have heard great things about the MGMAT SC book however, I personally used the Sentence Correction Bible published by Powerscore. It is going to take several reads before you learn the rules but after you will see that many of the rules are interrelated and some (like, parralellism, and modifier) reoccur again and again. DO NOT be put off by the fact that there may be more than one error in a sentence instead it is really GMAC giving you two chances to pick a right answer.

In regards to Critical Reasoning I would purchase the Logical Reasoning Bible by Powerscore which is the premiered study guide for CR Questions. You will get these questions in no time, practice is all it takes. Lastly, in regards to reading comp. just make sure you read for the general idea of the passage. You do not need to understand every word and even what every sentence is really saying.


Now on to math, if you are seeking to score a 650 you are really looking for a score of 40 in the Quant Section. This can be easily obtained by mastering the medium to medium hard type of questions that are between question 40 - question 160 part of the OG. This applies for both Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency Questions. I would review and really understand the logic that goes behid Data sufficiency questionsbecause most of those problems do not require complete calculation and are conceptual in nature. Again this is keeping an eye out for time.

All in all two months of work should defineitly be enough for you to score a 650. Good luck!

I am back after months , had a personal set back ( baby could not be left at day care while I study ! , :( therefore prep went out the door). Anyways this problem is solved now.

Thanks for the reply guys once again .I am starting out with OG & suppliments and in the process of collecting the rest.
