Need Expert Opinion

by Aayaam » Sat Sep 04, 2010 11:59 pm
Hi Experts,

You guys are really doing a terrific job out there ! I have just started my GMAT Preparation and I m thankful to Google to come across your portal.

My name is Aayaam and I am working for an IT firm for last 3.3 Years.

As per your recommendation, started with a Gmat Prep Software Test and scored 550. (Please note i have zero preparation till now!!!)

i was kind of disappointed :( I am aiming to take "THE TEST" by Nov 5, exactly two months from now and aiming at 720+

Should i opt for coaching or self study with your 60 day study plan? Kindly guide.

welcome to BTG :)
it depends on individual if they wish to take professional help or do self study
did u get less score because of lack of concepts or miss judged the answer
u also need to check ur weakness(verb or quant)..
try to revise ur basics..and give another shot at gmatprep
plan accordingly

Aayaam -

As experts at Beat the GMAT we do not try to convince people to take courses, we just offer info and try to help people succeed...whatever you decide to do we will be here to help!

I generally give the following guidelines to people who have the same sort of question that you do - self-study or get some help.

1) How much time can you devote to your studies? You have two months - to do it alone does take more time. If you can put in 30- 40 hour weeks then you have a better chance of doing it on your own, or with books. If you are busier with work, and can only do something like 20 hours a week then you may be a candidate for getting some help. 8 weeks at 20 hours may seem like a long time, but it may not be enough to review all of the concepts and develop your own best techniques for each question.

2) Are you the kind of person who generally looks at something and tries to figure out the best way of doing it? If you plan your errands so that you have no left turns in traffic or so that you drive the fewest miles then you are a better candidate for self study. If you are a person who does better with some tips and techniques and maybe even a little more you might want to get some help.

3) How disciplined are you? Some people can set a schedule and stick to it. Others do better when they have a class coming up and they know the homework will be reviewed.

4) When was the last time you had a math class? The more you need to review the help you may need.

5) Time or money? It costs more to take a course or tutoring, but it takes longer to do it yourself.

6) What kind of help? There are different kinds of help available. Books are the least expensive - for example the entire set of 15 Veritas books can be had for less than $300 at Amazon.com. Books by other companies would be in the same price range. An online class would probably be the next least expensive, generally under $1000, and then there are in-person classes and private tutoring.

Whatever you choose, best of luck!

Thanx David...
I think i have got most of my answers by now. You really suggested right questions that i need to answer myself more than you... :)

So answering one by one loud (This is not for you but for me David) :P -

1) How much time can you devote to your studies?
I can spend upto 27 - 30 hrs (Weekdays - 3 hrs each + Saturday - 6hrs + Sunday - 6hrs) with a full fledged job.

2) Are you the kind of person who generally looks at something and tries to figure out the best way of doing it?
Yes you have hit the right chord !! This is me..I can safely say I am a pretty organised guy. Always looking for the shortest but the most effective strategy to achieve a goal.

3) How disciplined are you?
Once i convince myself i can do it, i do it. I can and will follow the schedule.

4) When was the last time you had a math class?
6 Years Back. But i guess i will manage on my own as from Engineering background.

5) Time or money?
Both !!!

6) What kind of help?
Just a guidance on how to go about it...what material to study...i think i can do it on my own.

I will go with Self Study !!! :)

Once again Thanks !

Cheers
Aayaam
