33) Young deer must leave the safety of their group to search for food everyday; the
risk is to be eaten
by any of a multitude of predators
(A) everyday; the risk is to be eaten
(B) everyday at the risk of being eaten
(C) everyday risking them to be eaten
(D) everyday, they are risking being eaten
(E) everyday; likewise, they risk being eaten

I had read that the usage of "being" is wrong on the GMAT but here B is the right answer. Why ?

c,d,e: subject very agreement (presence of them, they)
in A) the risk is to be eaten is awkward and not grammatical where as B) makes sense.
Also "being" is usually wrong and not always wrong....

IMO B
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

In statement (A) the "risk is to be eaten" actually the predator eats the Young deer not the RISK so this is modifying the sentence or its kind of changing the meaning...so A can be eliminated. Rest of the choices as cans said Pronoun error is present..So we are left with choice B only...

Takeaway:
Keep the BEING choices dont eliminate them at the begining itself..First eliminate the other choices based on the more test errors like Subject-verb,pronouns,Modifiers,Parallelism etc and then if we are left with two options then take a call on the being...But as u see in the above choices there might be some cases where the meaning also changes...so look at all those before u eliminate the being choices...

Hope it helped....Thanks....

Experts please explain why option C is wrong.

I dont think that there is any subject verb agreement error in option C. "Young Deer" is plural in the sentence not singular as the non-underlined part of the sentence shows "young deer must leave the safety of their group" . For singular is has to be "it's".

I feel young deer is Singular here. Keep Singular Plural thing aside for a moment. There is one more issue here. to whom 'them' is referring to? Is it referring to deer or the group?

Hence option C is incorrect.

@cans there's no subject verb agreement error in c,d,e; pronoun ambiguity is present though.

@saketk Young deer is not singular here as the non-underlined portion contains "THEIR"

@Empirestateofmind Being can be used when we are describing a temporary state. It is often wrong, but it can be used. This question is actually a good lesson to understand how to approach SC - don't choose the right answer; eliminate the wrong answers.

I figured that out but did not edit my post. Though there was some confusion that's I said "Keep Singular Plural thing aside for a moment"

nandy1984 and prodizy, thanks a lot for the explanations. I understood it now.The learning is that being is as such not always wrong.
