Pronoun in a clause before modifying its noun

Hi All,

I have a doubt!

Is the following sentence formation correct?

Reaching the zenith of its sales in the 1960s, the spy novel...

Is this correct?

I feel that one cannot use a pronoun without any reference and in the above its refers to spy novel.

But I did find the same sentence structure in some sites:

Eg. Following its hugely successful campaign, the Club bought a number of new players.

Of Course, you can. Modifiers can either be placed in front or behind the noun!

The Club, following its hugely successful campaign, bought a number of new players.
