In the explanation it says (4+a^2)+(4+b^2) simplifies to 8+a^2+b^2....

How does it?

How does it?

Just remove the brackets!
(4+a^2)+(4+b^2) = 4+(a^2)+4+(b^2) = 8+(a^2)+(b^2)
