INFLATION - OG 11 SC Qs

by poonam197 » Thu Jan 15, 2009 7:05 pm
Q 32 : The Commerce Department announced that the economy grew during the second quarter at a 7.5 percent annual rate, while inflation eased it might have been expected for it to rise

A)it might have been expected for it to rise
B)it might have been expected to rise
D)its rise might have been expected

The correct option is B

In option D, 'its' refers to inflation. Then why is it incorrect ?? Please advice.

Q 39: Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

Explanation given by OG:
The original sentence is correctly written. The giant fungus is described as an interwoven filigree spawned .. some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres. The present participle extending parallels the past participle spawned.

My Doubt:
In the above question one part contains a present-participle and the other part contains past-participle. In parallelism, i was under the impression that the 2 or more parts of the sentence have to be under the same tense. Please advice/ throw more light on this subject..
