by jkati » Thu Jun 16, 2011 10:18 pm
i have started preparing for GMAT, my main area of lacking is verbal section, first time when i gave the test my score was 370 ( maths 30 and verbal 11) now in second time after one month preparation my score is 380 only (math 34 and verbal is 9). i have gave GMAT exam in mid of august, how should i work in right direction in verbal and maths as well, in math section basically i have problem in probability and permutation and combinations questions.

Please please please all the experts give me some suggestions how to prepare for this test.

Hello,

The advice I am going to give might be a bit blunt. Please understand that my intention is to help you here.

I see you are a non-native speaker and have perhaps not used English as the first language of instruction at school. There are some glaring errors you have made (ignoring the "verval" in the subject line of the post as a "typo"). Such as "my main area of lacking is", "i gave the test", "in second time", "380 only", "i have gave" - apart from others such as missing articles, absence of punctuations etc.

1. I would suggest you sit down with a basic grammar book for about a month and try practicing the theory through simple sentences. This might take a few months (which means you might need to push out your GMAT to a further date).

2. Permutation-Combination and Probability cannot be the reason for a Math score of 34. So again start with a basic math foundation book and work your way through each topic.

At the end of it do consider joining a GMAT Test prep course. More than what they teach, the advice and support you will get there would be invaluable (ofcourse subject to joining the right course :)).

Arun

PS: I am assuming you are looking at atleast a 500-600 score. If your aim is lower than that then the advice might not hold true completely. But this advice will still stand you in good stead since even post-MBA good communication skills (written and oral) would be imperative for a career in business.

If I am assuming correctly, you are lacking in basics and need to study basic maths and verbal thoroughly. Best source would be Manhattan Guides both for verbal and Maths and also this wonderful site. Your score will definitely increase about 100-150 points or may be more once you finish those guides.

Next thing would be to analyse the practice test thoroughly. You have not specified that what all the areas in the test you are facing problem. Analyse the mistake and make a note as why you are making that mistake. Best thing is to download the https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/gmat-error-log and practice.

Last but not the least is that wait till 8 days before the exam date. If you are not up to the mark (the score what you have set yourselves) then postpone the test rather than taking it. Nothing to loose rather you will gain.

Please do send me PM if you want to discuss.

Cheers!

Thanks for taking my feedback in the right spirit :)

My take is either (a) lower your aim (b) take more time to shoot high. There is really no 3rd way out.
