bottles of wine!

by Ozlemg » Mon Jul 04, 2011 1:09 pm
Jeana invited 3 friends, Brian, Bob, and Leslie, to a party at her house. She purchased 3 bottles of wine for the party. It takes Bob 6 hours, Brian 3 hours, and Leslie 4 hours to drink a bottle of wine. If Jeana does not drink wine, how long will it take for the friends to drink the 3 bottles of wine?
A. 3 hours
B. 4 hours
C. 3 hours 20 minutes
D. 4 hours 45 minutes
E. 2 hours 45 minutes
The more you suffer before the test, the less you will do so in the test! :)

Brian 1/3
Bob 1/6
Leslie 1/4

combined rate = 1/3+1/6+1/4 = 3/4

time for 1 bottle to be done = 1/3/4 = 4/3 hr

for 3 bottles = 4/3 * 3 = 4 hrs

Brian will finish 1/3th of the bottle in 1hr.
Bob will finish 1/6th of the bottle in 1hr.
Leslie will finish 1/4th of the bottle in 1hr.

Drinking together they would finish - 1/3 + 1/6 + 1/4 = 3/4 in 1 hour.
there to finish 1 bottle they would take 4/3 hours.
hence to finish 3 bottles they would take 4/3 *3 = 4hours
