A new genetically engineered papaya was produced not by seed companies who have been motivated by profit, which was the case with most genetically modified crops previously approved for commercial use, but university and United States Department of Agriculture researchers who allowed growers to use it free of charge.

(A) produced not by seed companies who have been motivated by profit, which was the case with most genetically modified crops previously approved for commercial use, but
(B) produced not by profit-motivated seed companies, the case with most genetically modified crops previously approved for commercial use, but
(C) produced not by profit-motivated seed companies, as was the case with most genetically modified crops previously approved for commercial use, but by
(D) not produced by profit-motivated seed companies, which was the case with most genetically modified crops previously approved for commercial use, but was produced by
(E) not produced by seed companies who have been motivated by profit, the case with most genetically modified crops previously approved for commercial use, but by

I think not by X but by Y parallelism wise only C,D,E qualifies....
D has modifier problem.....seed companies, which was the case
and E has ...companies who have been.....which is wrong ...
so IMO C

In all questions of this type, just make sure the 'remainder' of the sentence (outside of NOT X BUT Y) makes 'sense' with both X and Y.

A -> A new genetically engineered papaya was produced NOT X BUT Y

B -> A new genetically engineered papaya was produced NOT X BUT Y

C -> A new genetically engineered papaya was produced NOT X BUT Y

D -> A new genetically engineered papaya was NOT X BUT Y

E -> A new genetically engineered papaya was NOT X BUT Y

Now, you would see that this 'remainder of the sentence' does not make sense in any other option except in C. Lets take D as an example.

In D,

X -> produced by profit-motivated seed companies, which....

Y -> was produced by university and United States Department..

D would read:

A new genetically engineered papaya was (produced by profit-motivated seed companies, which...... ) X - Makes sense

A new genetically engineered papaya was (was produced by university and United States Department ) Y - Does not make sense (notice two 'was')

This way, you can easily invalidate all options but C.

Ashish, thanks. this sounds great .

Is this approach applicable in general always ?
(D) not produced by profit-motivated seed companies, which was the case with most genetically modified crops previously approved for commercial use, but was produced by
If I re-write to the version below assuming that there is no modifier in bewteen, it is incorrect following your reasoing . Is it wrong ? I am not able to decide .

(D) not produced by profit-motivated seed companies, but was produced by

Yes, D is incorrect.

As I mentioned, if you follow this approach, only C would emerge as the correct answer.

Thanks a lot . I have a similar question, how we will resolve it between C and D .

Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that many biological traits are not the products of natural selection, favored due to their enhancement of reproduction or survival, but that they are simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments.

(A) due to their enhancement of reproduction or survival, but that they are
(B) due to the reproduction or survival they enhance, but they are
(C) because they enhance reproduction or survival, but
(D) because they enhance reproduction or survival, but are
(E) because of enhancing reproduction or survival, but are

In (E), why is "...companies who have been.." incorrect? Isn't this merely describing the nature of the companies? Is it grammatically incorrect, or just not as good as choice (C) ?
