GMAT Score:500
Hello,

Hello, I am a little frustrated here.... After some serious $$$ in two different GMAT preps and hundreds of hours in GMAT study (not an exaggeration).. I am lost. The dreams of hitting 3rd round applications with a great package is falling through my fingertips.
I have been unable to break 500. Don't laugh and I am sure that there are many out there like me. I am quite skilled at math, surviving Calculus and Stats with an A+. When I study the OG, GOG, and VOG… I am doing great. I can answer 85% of the questions correctly, first time and within time limit, and starting from easy to hard. . I have taken seven practice tests…. Highest score is 530. I am not asking for much… just a 650 or 675.
Here are my tests:
Date / Quant / Verb / Score / Test
7/5/2008 / 20 / 18 / 350 / GMATPrep
9/26/2008 / 22 / 21 / 400 / Manhattan GMAT
10/24/2008 / 36 / 28 / 530 / Manhattan GMAT
11/19/2008 / 27 / 22 / 430 / Real GMAT
1/4/2009 / 30 / 29 / 500 / Manhattan GMAT
1/11/2009 / 30 / 30 / 510 / Manhattan GMAT
1/17/2009 / 30 / 25 / 460 / Manhattan GMAT
1/23/2009 / 37 / 25 / 500 / GMAT Prep
2/16/2009 / 34 / 25 / 500 / GMAT Prep

I have my detailed breakdowns on the subject types with Manhattan GMAT test. I have studied all of my weak points. But I still have not improved…

Then after too much frustration, I mapped out the GMATPrep test, question by question. If the test is CAT, starts off at 550, then I should be in the 700 range. In the beginning of all the tests, I slightly dip, then I start ramping up my questions. Problem here is that I actually plotted the test questions, right, wrong, wrong, right, right, right, right, right, wrong, right… ect. I plotted them out on graph paper and according to the graph paper; I should be in my 650-680 range. But my scores tell me that I am getting penalized twice for wrong and given one golden coin for being correct. I want to kill the tax collector here…

For one point = one down or one up… In quant, I am 5 points positive above the 500 line. For Verbal, I am 7 points above the 500 line.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong… and I refuse to accept failure.

Hey BlueWatersurfer,

Dont worry, i totally understand what you say.. From your score i see that you have steadily improved your Quant scores but your verbal needs some help. I suggest 2 things assuming you have atleast one more month before GMAT. Go through the MGMAT SC guide - Cover to Cover. MAke Flash cards whenever you find a tip!!!! Do their practice sections, and the problem set from that they have at the end of each chapter.. After taking a shot at their exercises, review ALL the answers and see their explanations (even if you got them right) Use OG for CR and RC. Practice. Make flash cards. And Remember to read through your flash cards every day. Dont even miss a single day. Even if the day is awesome and you badly wanna surf read through the flash cards and then reward yourself with some great surfing.

Once you have done that for atleast 3 weeks try taking a GMATPrep CAT test. Download Eric's flash cards for Quant and go through them..

I'm sure you can crack the 650!!! good luck mate!!!

Yes, note cards are a must! you must pound those concepts into your heard. Esp. # props and sentence corrections

You might be already be doing this but try to copy down the problems that you are getting wrong into word or excel and go over them daily making sure you remember what you did wrong and not to fall into the same traps. Of what I have seen and have heard, GMAT reuses alot of their questions and only change the numbers.

Wall Street and hk,

Thank you for your valuable words of advice. I truly appreciate it. I completed my official GMAT test today... I did not break 500. I will practice your techniques and refocus.

Again, thanks!
