co-ordinate system

by sairamGmat » Wed Aug 18, 2010 6:11 am
In the rectangular coordinate system, if line L is parallel to one of the axes, does line contain the point (4, 5) ?

(1) Line L contains the point (4, -5).
(2) Line L crosses the x-axis.

OA is C. can any one explain how?

You're looking to see if the line crosses (4,5) and you know it's parallet to either the x or y axis.

1) If parallel to the y axis, then yes, it crosses the the point (4,5), but since it can be parallel to the x axis as well, insuff

2) It can cross the x axis at any point, it 1, 2, 3, etc. so, insuff

When both are combined, you know from 2 that it is going to be parallel to they y axis. From A, it hits (4,-5). Draw the line and you will see it his 4,5, so both together are suff.

according ot stmt1, line can be drawn, either parallel to x-axis or to y-axis.
hence INSUFF

(2) Line L crosses the x-axis.
this doesnt give anyinfo about the line.
INSUFF

combining:
line is passing thru (4,-5) and is parallel to y-axis. hence it wil pass thru (4,5)
if it was parralto x-axis, it cannot ass thru x-axis.

Hence SUFF
