I need to improve algebra, but how?

I need to improve algebra badly! It is the one area that is destroying my quant score. Currently I am only getting 25-30% correct. I have read my Kaplan premier chapters, done the workshops, performed sample quiz over and over. Something obviously is not clicking. Has anyone else had this issue? What has worked for you?

Hi future cpa,

I'm hoping that you can provide a bit more self-assessment...

What aspects of algebra/math are you having problems with:
1) Are you comfortable with the "math" steps that you have to do? Are you "rusty" or making silly mistakes?
2) Do you know the formulas/patterns that come with algebra (FOIL, factoring, Quadratics, etc.)?
3) Are you able to correctly "translate" sentences into "math"?
4) Are these problems exclusive to algebra questions (meaning that you're fine with other types of math)?

For some excellent help with general math (algebra, arithmetic, etc.), you can visit Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org). It's a FREE site that can reteach you all of the necessary math skills that you'll need for the GMAT. Keep in mind that there are plenty of GMAT strategies/tactics/patterns that you also have to learn, but that's a different issue.

I understand the basic algebra concepts such as quad equations, foil, reverse foil, and substitution. Some of the problems are framed in a way where one has to pick numbers or back solve. I know that when picking #s is involved it is easy to choose small numbers, and use 100 for percent. To back solve you start with either B or D. I guess it is the layout of the problem itself? What is the problem asking? I go blank, or solve it wrong.

Hi future cpa,

The extra information that you've provided helps to define the real issue. It sounds like you're fine with the general math and concepts, but you're having trouble "setting up" the problem.

Before I offer any more suggestions, I'd like to know a bit more about your studies so far:

1) How long have you been studying?
2) What specific materials have you studied with besides the Kaplan book that you mentioned?
3) How have you scored on your practice CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
4) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
5) What is your goal score?
