Don't understand KAPLAN GMAT Scores

by kourousafama » Fri Aug 20, 2010 6:43 am
Hi guys,

I have just taken the first Kaplan GMAT test and I was chocked to find my score: 500 total with 26 for quant and 23 for verbal. I am really surprised by these results and also the fact that I did 660 on the GMATprep software.

Can anybody shed a light on the differences between Kaplan and GMATPrep or explain how it is possible that there is such a big discrepancy between the 2?

Many thanks,
kourousafama

It's their business model. The tests are hard so you'll better learn the concepts and perform at a high level on the actual test. Also, it's so you'll sign up for their classes. ;p Shh.

This is not an attack on Kaplan. I actually think it's brilliant. Also, a lot of people perform well on the GMAT after taking Kaplan courses because of the difficulty of the questions.

I scored a 620 on my Kaplan CAT. I scored a 730 and 770 on GMATPrep. I scored 750 on the actual test.

I see. I have to say that I have been too slow on the quant section when I did the test. I had most of the answers right (on the questions I answered) but didn't have sufficient and therefore had to guess at least the last 10 quant questions. I assume that impacts very negatively on the quant score.

But I was also surprised to see that my verbal score was very low. I normally handle that section ok. Do you start the verbal section with an average score and move up or down as you answer questions right or wrong? Or is that you start the verbal section from the theoretic score you got in the quant section?
