How does E-rater understands the reasoning

Hi All,

Can someone please tell how does E-rater understands the reasoning that we put forth for the AWA essays.....or it just checks the grammar/syntax ?

As per my understanding computer cannot interpret the meaning what we write....at max it can understand the syntax...

I am a bit puzzled and curious to know how does E-rater gives the rating to any of the essay....because two people can write the exact same essay in entirely different way....

My nerdy boyfriend told me the exact same thing: it shouldn't work, since essays are distinctively personal/subjective.

They say that it tests something like 50 different characteristics... I'd be curious what those 50 characteristics are...
