Key To GMAT Success

Hello Everyone,

This GMAT studying process has begun to consume me. I was just thinking about all of the strategies floating around, and had an epiphany. As we try to do many problems from multiple guides let's not forget the way to beat this test.

Always ask yourself ... Because and Why... when learning new material but especially when going through problem sets. If you're doing a problem and you check the answer and it's correct... ask yourself "But why is it correct?" or "This is the answer because when you do such and such the outcome is such and such." and try to think through the explanation.

If you cannot give a proper explanation then it's time to revisit that topic in the study guides.

I think this can be done for any target score. You're basically reaffirming the process to yourself. It's that extra added level of knowledge needed.

Anyone else agree?

;-)

Excellent post. You are correct. Its more about the process than the answer, because we won't see any of these questions on the actual exam.

I totally agree with you on that one... this is the mistake that happened to me on my first attempt at GMAT. I did not understand concepts clearly! I think the best strategy for the GMAT is concepts, concepts, and concepts... doesn't matter how many practice question you did correct..

In my prep class tonight, I laid out a study schedule that I think will work best for me. To many it will seem like a no brainer, but here goes:

After going through X amount of OG questions - using the timer and spreadsheet provided by MGMAT... I will take note of everything that I thought was difficult...and add to that the problems the spreadsheet tells me I got wrong... and also add the problems that took me more than 2 minutes to complete.

Then instead of looking up the explanations in the back of the books, use the study guides to go through the problems again and figure them out (untimed).

Worst case scenario look in the back of the book at their explanation and see if they're more concise than how I rationalized the answer.

I'm going to ween myself off of using the back of the book for explanations. I'd rather explain it to myself, so I truly understand the concepts...
