Practice test analysis

by bourneJ » Mon Jul 04, 2011 1:12 pm
Hi,
I just took my first practice test/mock test today. I used the practice test provided my Knewton. Following are my results.

Quant: Score: 38: Correct:27 Wrong:11
I had very less time towards the end, only about 10 mins and 10 questions.

Verbal Score:27 Correct: Wrong 20 Correct:17
was short on time here also...could have got couple more right at least.

I know i have a long way to go but still there is 2 months worth of time to work miracles :) (keeping fingers crossed) Any comments/suggestions on how to maximize my scoring so that i can reach my target of 700+....Oh btw i take my GMAT on 27 Aug.
thanks

Hello

Juggling between work and studies is tough so you need to define a significant time for your GMAT preparation.

Sometimes taking few days off work for preparing for the GMAT can help a person tremendously. If you have time this may not be a bad idea. Take practise GMAT tests to see how you are doing. If you cannot do that don't worry. What might work instead is to set aside 1-2 hours at night on weekdays and major part of your weekend to study and prepare for GMAT- in this case we will suggest a good 2-3 months preparation.

However we recommend you to keep taking practise tests to gauge your performance. It will help you in identifying your weak areas and you can focus on them accordingly.

There are various ways you can use to practise for your GMAT. It could be combination of-

1-Books- Books like- The Official Guide for GMAT Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review etc could be used.

2-Online Study Guide: Websites like Knewton, Grockit etc provide you with practise questions online.

3-Smart phone applications- Kaplan, Veritas etc offer applications to prepare for GMAT on your smart phones.

4-A combination of these could be useful at different stages and will also provide you flexibility and more content.

Also make sure you download GMATPrep, from the official GMAT website (its free). They have 2 practice tests that quite accurately predict your GMAT score. They also pick their questions from quite a large selection, so you can do each practice test around 3 times, and you'll still see a very small overlap of questions.

What was your overall score? Don't be too discouraged, no matter what it is. My first score (as a prep/mock) was awful. In fact, your scores look quite similar to mine, although my quant was a bit higher. But after just 2 weeks of prep I feel I could've answered almost 50% of my incorrect questions correctly.

If you're working, I think 15-20 hours a week is a good estimate. Good luck!

my score was 540. I could have got all but one question right in Quant. I think quant was pretty easy as compared to verbal. I 'm not sure if that is the case with knewton's practice test or that i knew most of the topics. Can anyone comment on the quality of questions on knewton's practice test.

Are there any recommendations on books for quants once i m done with the OG??

MGMAT's Number Properties and Word Translations are supposed to be really good, the best of the 5 quant guides they have. Which book you need really depends on your weakness. They have an Advanced GMAT Quant book as well, you can check them all out here: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/store/books#math-books
