I have purchased just about every book out there on the GMAT. I have taken two classes (Kaplan and MGMAT) and I have not obtained the score I need (650+). I am currently at a 590 and probably have 1 more shot at the GMAT before I throw in the towel and apply with what I have.

One thing I didn't do was work through the GMAC guides. Did I make a mistake by note doing this? Are these the best books to study from?

Yes, it is definitely a mistake not to use the official materials! You need to use the Official Guide (11th edition) and GMATPrep for sure.

I've heard good things about Manhattan GMAT, although their materials are supposed to be quite a bit harder than the real thing. Haven't heard a whole lot of good comments about Kaplan; it's supposed to be harder to but way off on scoring.

So definitely do the OG stuff. I also did the tests in Cracking the GMAT (Princeton Review) and thought those were very close to the real test.
