14 days to go, and i feel lost !

by karanvirk » Wed Oct 10, 2012 12:21 am
Hi
looking for some help here, i have taken a GMAT earlier last year and scored a 560 after scoring 700s on the practice tests. it was more because of the timing and weak verbal than anything else.
however, i am suppose to take the GMAT again in 2 weeks and i have been trying to study for it for the past 2 months. have had a few incidents in between so the study has been a little erratic, especially in the last 20 days i feel i am studying but not getting great results.
my practice test scores for MHGMAT have been in the range of 620 - 650 and GMAT Prep have been 660 - 690.

Verbal has been my weakness and i am trying to work on it by practicing more and going through the basics again, however i still seem to struggle with RC s and as of now feel lost and not knowing what to study and what not to. I know the message itself is not too clear, but that is really the state of my mind.

please advise

thanks

If you feel that RC is your weak subject currently, you should focus on it for the next few days and try to do 3-4 passages a day. When solving a question, focus on learning the method and not on timing. Leave the last 7 days before the exam to do tests and focus on timing.

Hmm... I wonder if you shouldn't be even more strategic about this.

If RC is your worst section, why not cut your losses there and focus on the sections that will provide the highest return on your investment. Not to say that you shouldn't practice RC passages between now and D-day, but instead of going for broke, it may make sense to focus on one RC area to improve on and leave it at that.

For example, you could focus on main point/purpose questions. Improve your batting average in this area -- so that by the time D-day comes around, you are 90-100% confident that you will answer those questions correct on any RC passage.

I see two benefits with this approach. 1) It will boost your confidence in RC, because you will instantly notice an improvement in one area. 2) It will give you time to focus on a Quant, SC or CR section that you are not yet 100% on.

On D-day, you will be fighting many battles, don't add one more battle by taking on too much RC at once.

Good Luck!

One of the biggest keys to success with RC questions is to actively engage in the passage. If you're interested, we have a comprehensive series of free videos on the topic of Reading Comprehension: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat- ... prehension
