Tackle GMAT

by yogilale » Tue Nov 10, 2009 11:15 am
Hi All,

I will just give a brief introduction of myself and then pose my question. I am Chartered Accountant by profession and have been working for the past 4 years. As a Commerce graduate and CA background I am not very strong in mathematics because as a professional we are used to take calculator for 12*15 also. I started to change it but I know it will take some time. I want to work in Mergers & Acquisitions and hence need to do MBA from top 20 B Schools in the world. Its a daunting task I know. I took my GMAT for the first time on 27th Oct 2008 and got a pathetic score of 490. The score details are Verbal:21/23%; Quant:36/46%; Total:490/34%; AWA:5/55%. I felt very bad as I thought I had prepared atleast for 600 but the exam fever and lack of practice killed me. I didnt do anything for the past 1 year for GMAT as I did some specialisation in Valuation in the mean time and now plan to take GMAT again. I am not in a hurry and even if I need to basic grammar and mathematics for a month I am ok with that. I want to properly approach this exam and hence need advice from all you experts. The study material which I have is OG-12; Kaplan 800; Manhatten verbal (old version- a photocopy). Please let me know at the earliest.

FOR starters

manhattan - SC
For CR - powerscore CR bible
RC- you can start with Manhattan for Rc as well but in RC no one can suggest to you a particular method, you will have to figure out what works for you

ex - read slowly but grasp
skim through understand main points of passage and attack the question

QUANT

no expert in that , hence wont be able to suggest you ways to imnprove in it

but if you wnat to start from basics you can buy a copy of jeff's maths bible its quite good

Don't worry. I did awful on my first practice test (580), but now I am scoring around a 750.

It takes time to become familiar with the test. I would recommend you spend a few weeks just taking practice tests repeatedly, just to get more familiar with the exam in general. Then you can focus on your weaknesses specifically.

Good luck!
