Anybody else use 800score.com ?

by specialk1975 » Sun Dec 30, 2007 11:35 pm
I have been using a 2008 Kaplan Premier guide, a 2005 Arco Gold guide, and an online guide from 800score.com. I like the 800score tests better because they don't seem to recycle the same questions like Kaplan does. I bought a 2006 Kaplan program at Half Price Books, and several questions from there appear in the 2008 edition. I can't really get a good gauge of where I stand. Anyways more to the point, for those who have used 800score, do you think it was adequate for preparing you for the test? Were the CAT'S similar in difficulty level to the real thing?
I have been studying for a little over 2 months now , and by the time I take the test it will be 3 months. I took my first CAT using the 800score on Nov.13 and I scored a 500. 2 days ago I took a different one of theirs and recieved a 650. 39Q , 42V. The best on Kaplan was a 590, but that was over a month ago , and I really don't have any desire to take anymore Kaplan tests now that I have seen a majority of the questions. My most recent Arco test was a 620. So my goal is 650+ , am I on good path or should I try another company?Suggestions welcome. Trying to go to the best MBA program I can get accepted to. GPA 3.97, prior management experience.

Do a search on it...every post I've read says their tests are terrible, not reflective of the real GMAT. Stay away from them.

I don't think Arco has a great reputation either, but they're not mentioned a whole lot, hardly ever. I did the Princeton Review tests and those were the closest to the real thing, after GMATPrep.

- I just took a shotgun approach and decided it would be wise to see as many different versions as I could find. I just purchased the GMAT review (yellow book). Gonna start cranking out the problems.

Under the recommended books, I saw the Kaplan Premier review states, "The scores tend to be skewed down dramatically–from 70-120 points below what you should actually expect on your real exam (what I’ve noticed anecdotally)". Is this the general consensus?

I wouldn't discount the Kaplan CATs entirely. Remember that the goal is not to most accurately predict your score, but to best prepare yourself for the exam. See my post on the progression of my score with the Kaplan CATs:

https://www.beatthegmat.com/when-i-focus ... t7690.html

As far as the questions repeating, my CATs were from the Kaplan Classroom course, and I saw only a few repeats.

Also try PowerPrep, which is an older version of GMATPrep, also made by GMAC.

PowerPrep can be found here: https://del.icio.us/beatthegmat (look under the practice material section)

800score and Kaplan

by Petergmat » Thu Jan 03, 2008 5:49 am
Hello there

I used the 800score software (2004 version) and I noticed that the "CATs" are not adaptive. You can check that by taking the same tests two or three times (mark answers at andom) and when you review it, you will see that the pool of questions is nearly the same. Besides, there were some mistakes in some math questions in tests 4 and 5. The good thing is the variety of questions (probability, permutations, coordinate geometry, etc), something Kaplan didn't have.

I have compared the practice questions in the Kaplan CD 2003 and 2006, and they were....the same!!!!. I have also bought the Kaplan Verbal Workbook 3rd edition because I had the 2nd edition, and....it was identical!!!! even the information in each page. If you compare the problems and tips in the Kaplan books 1998, 2003 and 2006, you will understand what I'm trying to say. In my opinion, Kaplan material is not updated. See the questions from the gmatprep software and compare.

The best software for your preparation is the official one: gmatprep (and also the previous version called powerprep).

I hope this information can help you and the other members.

Peter

I guess maybe if you take the Kaplan class you can get some "fresh" questions. I'm sorry, I don't want to shell out that kind of coin for questions.

Our tests (ManhattanGMAT) are adaptive (and, in fact, are built on the same algorithmic theory as the official test). Anybody can sign up for one free test.

You can also buy access just to the tests, either directly or by buying one of our review guides. If you do this, you get 6 "clean" tests (that is, no question repeats) and you also get access to the assessment reports (the same ones we teachers use when analyzing our students' tests).

Note: if you take a free test, you'll only have 5 "clean" tests left - just FYI.

Also: it's actually cheaper to buy one of our books, which will give you access to the tests, than to buy access only to the tests - check out our web site for details, but I think the books are around $30 each and test access only is around $40 or $50. :)
Please note: I do not use the Private Messaging system! I will not see any PMs that you send to me!!

I heard from 800score.com that their current adaptive tests are little harder than real GMAT!
(By the way it's exactly opposite to what I had mentioned in my
"signature post below" but I prepared that article more than a year ago so this might have changed by now :?)

Yeah! Kaplan doesnt update the content/strategy and even its question bank! maybe you should've contacted me first ;)
