Old Evidence - Internal social upheaval caused collapse of Egypt's old kingdomakhp77 wrote:scorpionz wrote:IMO : C

Explanation Please
New Evidence - Environmental conditions caused the collapse.
However the two are not mutually exclusive. The evidence states that the global cooling resulted in a drought. The last line is the key. It states that undoubtedly there were serious social problems but these resulted from the drought. Hence the new evidence chain would look something like this..
New Evidence - Environmental conditions caused drought. Drought caused social problems. Social problems led to collapse.
Since we are looking to strengthen the argument, the new evidence being presented must supplement the environmental cause and the line of reasoning above. Out of the options
A- Does not address the environmental factors
B- Refers to only the social causes which are anyway accepted and are not being disputed
C- If other well-established civilizations around Egypt also underwent a similar decline, factors which were not internal to Egypt alone must be at play. The second line in the evidence states that it was a period of "global cooling" and hence this could be a valid factor. This option clearly strengthens the environmental aspect of the problem.
D- Again, refers only to social causes
E- Irrelevant to strengthening the argument.
Hope the above explanation is clear!!
Cheers!
A--> This infact weakens.abhigang wrote:IMO C.
B--> It restates the conclusion.
C--> It basically states that the well established regions also underwent declines because of global cooling from drought.
D --> I was thinking about this also but ultimately eliminated it as it talks only about the social conditions. Just stating the conditions were bad but not pointing to the root cause.
E --> Out of scope.
Hence, IMO C.

Hi!
IMO C
A. it is irrelevant. it suggests that "most civilizations have succumbed to internal strife rather than external factors" but there is no direct link to the Egypt's case
B. it weakens the argument by strenghtening alternative cause of the collapse of Egypt's old kingdom( social problems)
C. it strenghtens the argument. it is the answer
D. it does not refer to the conclusion. it suggests that conditions of society were deteriorating but neither confirms nor denies if it was the reason of collapse.
E. it is out of scope because of the time period
hope it helps!
Best,
Maciek

A - very generic and does not necessarily apply to the fall of the Egypt's Old Kingdom
B - doesn't prove that the collapse happened due to environmental causes
C - adds weight to the fact that it is is probably due to a factor which is not local but at the least regional to Egypt
D - adds weight to a conclusion trying to establish that the collapse happened due to social factors
E - A different time period. Doesn't reflect why old kingdom collapsed
my pick was C
