IMO C

A - that included... seems to be modifying first term
B - Wrong tense in includes as well as modifier error as in A
C - Correct
D - which - referent of which is not clear. Also wordy.
E - among them being - Incorrect tense.

United States Senator Daniel Inouye was appointed to several posts within the Democratic party during his first term, including assistant majority whip and vice-chair of the Democratic Senatorial Committee.

When in doubt use, "strike method " where u can remove/delete "extras". Extras are generally made of modifiers and prepositional phrases.

Here I removed the "within the Democratic party during his first term", a prepositional phrase .

"including" ( verb+ing" modifier) modifies "posts".

In the original sentence, "that" refers back to "first term".

Pick C

United States Senator Daniel Inouye was appointed to several posts that include assistant majority whip and vice-chair of the Democratic Senatorial Committee.

Here " that" correctly refers back to "posts". Now u spotted the error of using "that " which referred back to "first term" in e original sentence.

What is the problem in D?

We know, from Manhattan SC guide, that "some of which" can be used as like as "which" is used.

If it is true, D should be correct as well.

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Had the sentence been - In 1995, United States Senator Daniel Inouye was appointed to several posts some of which were assistant majority whip and vice-chair of the Democratic Senatorial Committee. the use of some of which would have been perfectly fine.

However, in the given statement, with the introduction of modifiers within the Democratic party and during his first term the modifying clause is too far removed from the noun it modifies posts. Thus there is a scope of an ambiguous though absurd meaning emerging that the first term was assistant majority whip and vice-chair of the Democratic Senatorial Committee. This is the problem in D.

Hope this helps.
