attempt to overcome is more idiomatic
In attempt overcoming overcoming is a gerund . i think attempt to is correct .
MGMAT SC says adverbs are preferable to nouns. to overcome is an adverbial modifier serving as a pseudo adverb
,inspiring explains the previous clause and modifies the noun Bannister and verb broke
The and chamges the meaning by giving equal importance to both the act of breaking the barrier and the act of inspiring others

LOL both B and C are supposed to be wrong .
BTW the comma isnt underlined that makes either A,B or C the correct answer . However the given OA confirmed from MGMAT Forums is D which is wrong . So the source is dubious
