CFA to make up for low Q score?

by john722 » Thu Dec 04, 2008 2:37 am
Hi,

I only scored 42 (66th percentile) in the Quant part of the GMAT.
Do you think that having passed the first two levels of the CFA program can make up for this low score in my application?
I am aiming for the best programs in Finance (NYU, Wharton, Columbia).

Thanks for your help

J

Dear J,

Having passed the CFA might help to demonstrate your quantitative ability. If your GPA is high, you did well (B+ or better) in your quant classes in college, and have quantitative work experience, then you should be able to make the case that you can handle the quantitative aspect of the coursework. Your quant score, alone, will not be a reason for rejection just like a high GMAT is not a reason for admission. The other components of your application, essays/recs/interview, are critical to the decision. Focus on putting together the strongest application possible and consider retaking the GMAT IF you have time, it won't compromise the quality of the rest of your application, and you know you can score higher.

Good luck,
Lisa
