Should I proceed with the application?

by lancs123 » Tue Aug 16, 2011 11:00 am
Dear MBA Experts,

My GMAT is very low: 650 (47 quant, 34 verbal, 6.0 essays). I just retook it today - another 650 (quant 42, verbal 37).

Do you think it's still worth applying for the 1st round? Or should I retake the test (that would be middle September), and apply for the 2nd round? I was told by collegues that actual application gmat scores aren't that strict when one's female and non-US and also non-English native, but that's just hearsay. In your opinion, is it possible to apply with the low score, but then to update the score later - prior to the deadline?

Thanks to everyone for providing feedback. Each and every one is very, very welcome.

Lancs

Lancs,

Here is some non sugar-coated feedback.

Yes, for sure you should retake if you can do materially better, as you are far away from the average, and I don't yet see evidence of the kind of "star power" hook that could get you into either of these two schools with such a low gmat.

You should also have an honest conversation with yourself as to why only those two schools, and that should also tie into the question of why you need/want an MBA.

Good Luck!

Hey Lancs,
Well with the UN, magna cum laude, your languages you've got some great stuff there. It would be a shame to waste your chances with a GMAT that just isn't high enough. If you are ONLY aiming for HBS and Stanford, study, retake. Focus your time on energy on that until you get the score you need. Ann when you DO have that score have a look at other programs too :)
