Please evaluate my candidacy

by misterchipper » Thu Jul 08, 2010 12:28 pm
I have 2 dilemmas.

I just took the GMAT and scored a 710--Q49, V37. However, on practice tests I was consistently scoring 730 or so. The Quant was 48-49 but the Verbal was 40.

Is it worth retaking the test? The first time I took the test I scored a 680 with Q47 V36.

Secondly, please evaluate my candidancy.

BS Mechanical Engineering from MIT 4.2/5.0
7 years work experience in the consulting world and then 2 years as a client in the pharma world.

Thank you for your help

I think you have an excellent score and a brilliant chance to get yourself into a top class business school.

A friend of mine got into INSEAD with a score of 720 without any problems, and he certainly doesn't match your other credentials :)

The difference between a 710 and a 730 is not statistically significant. It is also above the average for all but two or three schools. It will not be an issue with your application. Besides, taking the test three times, especially with such a strong score, will suggest to the admissions committee that you are focusing on the wrong thing.

Describing your professional career, what you have learned and what you will bring to the classroom will be far more important to establishing yourself as an attractive candidate. Your combination of consulting and pharma experience should be a great selling point. Be sure that you can clearly and convincingly articulate your career goals and why that particular school will contribute to your meeting those goals.

You are an excellent candidate. Good luck!
