I registered for the GMAT July 5, 2011 on a whim. I had about 6 weeks before I was going on vacation, i figured this would be enough time to prepare for the GMAT. I'm not planning on going for my MBA for another 3 years but I wanted to get it out of the way before they added the integrated reasoning section. My test was this morning (August 18, 2011).
I started studying July 9th by doing a gmatprep test and got a 630. I did quant problems from the OG and skimmed through three of hte mgmat quant books to familiarize myself with the concepts. I did the second gmatprep and got 710. I kind of stopped studying at this point. The weekend before the exam I redid the gmatprep exams and got a 630 (was really tired) and a 710 again. The night before the exam I looked over the AWA templates but otherwise tried to not think of the exam. I didn't really study verbal at all. I looked at the MGMAT SC guide but found myself confused by the rules, I was doing much better naturally without applying any concepts.
I got an amazing sleep and woke up feeling fresh, which is rare for me. I also ate a light breakfast, which is out of the ordinary as well since I usually eat at noon. I left early but halfway to the exam center I realized I forgot my wallet so I drove back, got it, and went back again which ate 30 minutes of time. With some pretty aggressive driving I got there 10 minutes before the scheduled time. I pounded through it and the questions were getting pretty tough. I was expecting somewhere between a 650 and a 680 realistically, so when I saw 750 I was shocked. Q46 (74%) and V48 (99%)
Overall I found the exam to be more about making decisions under pressure than about applying quantitative or grammar rules, etc and overall it wasn't all that bad. I didn't post this to rub it in anyone's face how little prep I did, but all those stories of people going nuts to prepare had me worried, so maybe this will calm some people down. This site is a great resource though, it gave me a starting point and the experiences people posted did help me out. Good luck everyone!
Anyways, I'm off to Spain now. Good luck!
