Scored 700 in just one month

by me_1234 » Sun Dec 21, 2014 11:49 am
My GMAT journey has been an intense one month ride. This year I decided to apply for my MBA. I made a miscalculation regarding the GMAT and thought I would not need much time to study. I was always the type of person that did not have to study hard in school.

Once I took a practice exam and spoke to a few friends, I realized most people took 3-6 months to study. I wanted a 7 in front of my score in order to apply to top schools. It was then I realized I was trying to squeeze in the GMAT studying in one month while working 12 hour days. Scary!

I bought a bunch of books such as Princeton Premium Guide, Official Guide, and some assorted Manhattan GMAT books. To be honest, I don't think any of these were great. Official Guide is necessary for the practice questions, but most of the explanations are terrible and unclear. The Manhattan GMAT companion guide offer some decent explanations where the Official Guide failed. The Princeton book was probably better for someone starting off with a low score because it read quite elementary.

Disappointed with my books, I turned to tutors. I was shocked that many companies charged over $200/hour. Through more digging I tried three different tutors I found on Craigslist. One was awkward, one was rude, and the last one I stuck with. Jeff Miller from Target Test Prep was awesome and a bit of a psychiatrist for me while I crammed for the test.

In looking back, what worked best for me was one on one tutoring and googling things I didn't know, which led me to this site. This site was greet for digital moral support and free question explanations from experts. It's a good alternative if you cannot afford a tutor.

In the end, I studied everyday and took 4 practice exams. I didn't have a social life for this time period, but my resulting score of 700 was worth it. My advice to those that want a 700 is to work hard, but more importantly have confidence. The night before my exam, I relaxed, had a nice meal at a favorite local restaurant with my boyfriend, and got a good night's rest. I think this relaxation truly helped the day of.

Good luck to all of you and feel free to private message me with any questions.

Hi melanie.espeland,

That's great news about your score. While you're something of an outlier when it comes to the amount of study time that you put in, I can attest to the fact that you really did commit to the task. You posted heavily and asked follow-up questions, you sought out perspective and advice and it certainly looks like you were able to ingrain everything that you learned.

When are you planning to apply to Business School? And just as an aside, what were your Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores?

Thanks Rich, I definitely worked hard for it. I'm applying to B school now in round 2 applications. I'd prefer not to disclose more details about my score on the forum, but am happy to do so via private message.

Sincerely,

Melanie

Hi Melanie,

I was just curious about the score breakdown. If you don't want to discuss it openly, then that's fine. If you have any concerns about the scores though, then you might find it worthwhile to discuss them with someone (such as an Admissions Expert - there is a Forum full of them on this site). I'm also happy to offer my perspective if you're interested. Regardless, congrats again on a fantastic score!

Congratulations Melanie on your target score. Am sort of in a similar boat. I have about a month to study (being studying for the past 15 days). Not using a tutor though and feel comfortable with my basics and self study (guess my gmat will confirm that). Wanted to know how you effectively used this site especially the forums. Am following the 60 day program from this site (compressing it to my time frame)?

Hi venkat

Thank you and I wish you the best of luck as well! The Quant learning tool that I used from https://targettestprep.com/ was definitely helpful for my Quant, which was always my weak point. There is so much information on the site so it is impossible to get through it all in just 1 or 2 months, so I worked with my tutor to focus in on what areas I was weakest in, plus what we felt I could learn quickly and effectively in time for the test. There are certain topics like Exponents and Combinations that I didn't know going in but were easy enough to learn in a short time period, and typically show up on the test.

Let me know if any other q's.

Sincerely,

Melanie
