Career:
Started at a low end company immediately after graduation.I missed a few chances at the tier-1 companies as i did not have a challenging score. However I performed well and within months I was confirmed as an employee from a trainee.I moved to a tier-1 company in India and then to US for consulting work. I did well in consulting and was in the US for 4 years and moved back to India in order to grow in a booming economy. I joined Oracle in their ERP development center and worked for 2 years.I then moved to my current company, where I joined as a project lead and within a year I became a project manager.
I currently manage ERP support for 2 UK based companies and frequently travel to UK on business.

Goals:
My goal in doing a MBA program is to first develop into a senior technology executive and then move into overall company operations. In the past 10 years I believe a MBA program will help me develop business skills which are crucial to be a strong leader in any organization.I have lots of "on-the-job business training," but am looking for some rigorous business classes, particularly in finance/accounting. I also see an MBA as a factor in helping me get future promotions.

Current Plans for future:
I plan to take a sabbatical from work, join get a MBA degree and get back to helping my current organization in growing furthur and sharing my experience.

Questions:
1.I am aware that I dont bring much to the table apart from experience. So is a score of 700 on GMAT good to get me to top 50?
2. What else can i do as i want to take the test in September 08.
3.Should i do E-MBA instead? what are the advantages or lack of it vis-a-vis a regular MBA.

Thanks for the advice!

Dear mathan,

To be competitive for most top 50 programs, you need to score at or above a 650 (the higher the score, the better). If you can get into the 700s, you will have more options available to you.

Your work experience profile is the most common profile in the global MBA applicant pool, and thus you must distinguish yourself on all of the other application components. I do think you have strong work experience, and it is good to have the recommendations you mention. It is critical that you spend time on your essays and resume to present yourself in the best way possible.

As for EMBA vs. traditional MBA, you definitely meet the work experience requirement for EMBA. The main difference between the two is the peers in the classroom with you and material in EMBA taught with more of a strategic perspective. I do think this is a viable option for you to consider if you plan to return to your current company. As most folks in an EMBA work while in school, perhaps you can find a workable solution with your current company and location of a EMBA program? If it is not possible to continue working, I do think the traditional MBA is still a viable option for you and you will get what you need from it.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the reply. I have furthur two questions to follow up:

1.E-MBA or part time MBA is generally frowned upon in India simply because they dont add any value to what I am currently doing. And doing a E-MBA in the US, is that worth the money being spent on travel etc?

2. I am currently a Project Manager in a top IT company. If i have to settle for a middle rung MBA school and quit my job to be there for 2 years, would it be worth my while? When I come back, do i bring more value to what i am doing (and at the end of the day, more money and bigger job) ?

Please help me as your answer would decide my course of action.

Dear mathan,

You are the only one who can decide your course of action as you are the one making the investment of time and money in your future. If you feel strongly you need to do a full-time program, then that is what you should do. If you plan to return to India and know a full time program is more valuable, then you should probably do a full time program. Likewise, you should have a good idea of school reputation in India and can identify potential programs that will be a good fit for you. Lastly, the type of opportunities available to you at the end of your MBA, regardless of where you go to school, mostly depends on the effort you put into your career search.

Good luck,
Lisa
