NYU Langone - Do i have a good shot?

by wkp2101 » Mon Aug 08, 2011 5:09 am
Hi,

I am wondering how my profile would stand up for NYU Langone admission.

I just took the GMAT, got 690. Did well on verbal but only 64 percentile on quant.

I went to Columbia University, had a 2.98 gpa. Was a key member of the varsity baseball team....if that helps.

I have been working for 2 and a half years as a credit analyst, and half a year before that at a different bank as a credit analyst.

Should I retake the GMAT? I did not study at all, only took 2 practice tests. Scored 690 and 730 on the practices. I know I could improve my quant score easily, with some review of stuff like permutations, geometry, etc. The app deadline is September 15, so I'd have about a month to study.

How good are my chances of getting in?

Thanks!

Well the going will likely be a little bit tough. But 690 is good enough to get you in NYU if you have a good all around application (and yes, the basketball will help). But with your grades and low quant, you are gonna have to write an optional essay essentially PROVING that you have quant capacities (maybe you did CFA or something like that?

Thanks for the response. Do you think the best course of action would be to study for a month and retake the GMAT? I am sure I could acheive a much higher quant score with some studying.

I got 720 math on the SAT, is that something I should point out? I have not done much math related stuff since college. I did very well in Calculus 1 but struggled in higher level math courses so I can't really use that. No CFA or anything.

Appreciate the help.

If you can get a higher quant go for it. But be prepared that it might not happen. I don;t mean to get all pessimistic on you, but have a plan B. i.e. Will you apply round two and retake the GMAT a third time? Will you push your off till next year. The more you think through any possible eventuality, the better off you will be.

wkp2101,

Greetings. I would only add that the GMAT averages for part time programs can be quite a bit lower versus full time MBAs. For NYU part time, 80% of the gmat scores are between 620 and 730, so your 690 is likely fine. And perhaps there is a positive trend in your undergrad gpa to add some context? If not, you will have to take responsibility for that performance and show how you have excelled in your career and demonstrated quantitative thinking.

So retaking the gmat is still not a bad idea if you feel you can move the needle. But, as I said, part time gmat scores have a different mean versus full time.

I think you can apply with a 690 GMAT score and an optional essay explaining your lower quantitative score. NYU Stern has a January admissions cycle that is less competitive than their September admissions cycle.

Good luck,
