Very nervous

by varun0629142 » Thu Nov 08, 2012 9:58 am
I am very nervous as my exam is on the 27th and still not getting the desired score. scoring in 30's in quant and in 20's in verbal. Had many family problems and I request BTG family to motivate me please. I aspire to do the best but somehow not able to concentrate.

Regards

Varun -

Success builds motivation, not the other way around. So do some of the things that you are good at and do some easier problems of that type. Get some problems right and even the ones that you get wrong, consider those a success when you learn something from them.

Small successes will lead to you building on those. The 27th is not a long time from now so you will need to work hard and work smart.

One of the best ways for you to improve quickly is to stop making silly mistakes. Keep track of the questions that you "should have gotten right" except that you fell for a trap or made an assumption. Then find ways to avoid these - for example write out the question at the beginning of each quant problem so that you always answer the right question!

Are you nervous when you take the practice tests?

Thanks Jim and David,

Yes I am feeling a bit restless when attempting CAT's. The things I must have got right are also getting wrong. Since I have now 19 days now and I can study 15 hrs a day but I really dont know how to direct or channelize my studies. Rather then slowing I am getting reckless and believe I cannot solve a question as I am not able to read a question critically. Please help.

Many thanks to the BTG team.

I fail to understand and interpret, what is smart study rather then slogging.

Thanks

Keep in mind that, if you reschedule your test at least a week before your current test day, it will cost you $50 to do so. Otherwise, you must either take the test or forfeit your registration fee.
So, if you find that you are unable to reach your target score on a practice test before Nov 19th, you might want to consider rescheduling the test.

Cheers,
Brent

Thank you all,

I have rescheduled my exam for the 20th Dec. I guess a more rational decision and let go some B schools. Please advice how to make studies the most effective please - spec DS and Verbal.

Many Thanks

Hi Varun,

I should note that everyone struggles with Data Sufficiency (DS) questions at first. This question type is totally unique to the GMAT, so it's foreign territory.

If you're looking for some extra DS resources, we have a free set of videos that cover everything you need to know: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat-data-sufficiency

Just stay calm, practice the areas that are weak, and basically RELAX (again).. 99.9% of the people perform better when they are relaxed, tension-free and when they do not have any pressure on them. The GMAT is unlike the FINALS most of us are used to from college in the sense that you can take it again if you do not perform well the first time. Take it as a challenge, a fight against you and the GMAT, and look at it from the prospective that ONLY YOU CAN WIN!, because you have the privilege of rescheduling as many FIGHTS with the GMAT as you want, and the GMAT is in a LOSE-LOSE situation ;-(..

If you are weak in quant, and can point out certain areas of weakness (DS for example, try going over some of the strategies with regards to DS, practice DS from various sources (last 20-30 OG13 questions are quite good). You can go over VIDEOS from RON (MGMAT) for strategy on test day etc. All in all, do not spend more then 3-5 hours a day on prep, and try to be relaxed and sleep well in the final 2-3 days before G DAY.

You have exactly 1 month with you. Work on your concepts for 15 days and then take practice tests for the next 15 days. I'm no expert though as I haven't taken the GMAT yet. Is scheduled on 19th Nov.
