IMO " independent from " is idiomatic than "independent of."

1)Judiciary is independent of other branches of government

This means that Judiciary does not depend on other branches. It was independent of other branches of the government from origin.

2)Judiciary is independent from other branches of government.

This means that Judiciary was earlier dependent on other branches and has now been separated or independent from other branches of the government.
