Berkeley Essay on Parent's Greatest Achievement

by brz » Tue Jan 26, 2010 11:40 am
Hi lisa,

What is the second Berkeley optional essay about?

The adcom asks for one's parents most important degree.

Is it meant for the applicants to brag about their parents' roles?

If my dad is a very influent person, can I use the essay on my behalf.

Best,

Brz

Dear brz,

I'm not sure what question you are specifically asking about as none of the Haas essay questions I have seen ask you to write about your parents (https://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/essays.html). Some schools have questions in their applications about your family such as the highest degree of each parent and/or each parent's profession. The reason schools ask for this type of information is to gain a sense of whether you come from a background where your parents are highly educated and what influences you had regarding education and professional careers. It is generally not information that is going to influence the admissions decision that will be made about you relative to your application.

Good luck,
Lisa

Lisa,

Here is the question:

2. (Optional). Please provide the occupation of, and highest degree obtained by, your parent(s) or guardian(s).

I'm wondering if there is any possible way to benefit from this essay.

Best,

Brz

Please see my previous response for why the school is asking the question. Thanks!
