GMAT Score:630
Hi,

Before I start, here's a bit of information about me.
I am an IT Engineer working with one of the IT firms in Pune. Have just completed my 4 years of experience and am preparing myself for the next move in my career: an MBA degree.

I had joined a coaching institute just to keep me on track with my preparations in June this year and after three months of preparation took GMAT on the 7th of Sept. in Mumbai.

I had taken 6 Princeton Review tests and the two GMATPrep tests (will update the scores later, as they are in my laptop at home :)).
On the 5th Sept. I took GMAT Prep second test and faired a score of 750 - 50q,41v, which did good to me and made me feel at ease for the test. After this test I practiced and read many AWA issues and arguments as that was a bit that I had not practiced all through my preparation.

On the day of my test, when I reached the test center I noticed there was some construction work going on in the adjacent shop, which shared one of the walls with the test center. Although worried about the hammering and drilling noise I was anticipating the test room to be more sound proof. We raised a concern about the noise to the test center manager, but were told that earplugs will be provided to cope up with the noise. Of course we were provided the earplugs, which didn't really help much, reason being
1. The hammering and drilling noise was too loud, with ocassional dumping of some heavy stuff on the ground.
2. Had never expected to take the test in such an environment and after plugging in the earplug, things are different - one tends to hear all the hearbeats and pulses, which, take my word, does distract your thoughts. (If you have not practiced taking tests wearing earplugs, I would strongly recommend you to do that)

Managing with the noise and desperately trying to keep the mind on track all through the test, I got a score of 630 - 47q, 30v. The test score, needless to say, was very disappointing but I was so stressed out that I didn't know what to do.

The score hit me hard and I was thoroughly diheartened, so I mailed the Pearson Vue and raised a concern about the noise and requested them to allow me a retake of the test, but only yesterday I got a call from them that my request has been declined because no one else has raised that concern. This feels so unjust to me and has put me in a fix.

Because of all these incidences I am losing faith and, although I want to take the test again within a month's time, I am unable to bring myself together and put myself to studies with a stable mind.

I had thought the test centers are under audio-video surveillance and my case would be investigated by browsing through the recordings and not by basing it on the fact that no one else reported such a concern. I strongly feel that if it was not for those distractions I would have scored much better.

I want to re-take the test and have started preparing for the same...but am finding it tougher to prepare now than the first time because of these incidences. :cry:

Please help.

Regards,
Vivek.

Hi,

Here are my mock test scores of princeton review that I had been taking during my preparations. The first test is the one I took just before I started my preparations with Princeton. The last two are GMATPrep 1 and 2 respectively.

9/5 450 - 17v 35q
28/6 610 - 31v 44q
19/7 520 - 22v 40q
12/8 640 - 34v 47q
16/8 690 - 40v 45q
19/8 650 - 33v 48q
31/8 700 - 37v 49q
5/9 750 - 41v 50q

Is there any help or suggestion I can get here?

Thanks in advance,
Vivek.

Well, your test scores seem to suggest that your below average performance on test day was due to uncontrollable conditions rather than poor preparation.

I say cheer up and go for a second try! It's worth all your effort! You could also pursue this complaint to Pearson Vue if you think it's worth it, since it seems to me that the case you're making is pretty solid. Indeed, why base a solution to a complaint on the fact that no one else was disturbed?

I would suggest to take couple of CATs under noisy environment, so you are used to such an environmnet and you are better prepared for such an eventuality :)

Hi Vivek,

I agree with DanaJ, your scores, especially the last 750 does not stand anyway near your actual GMAT score. I must say, go ahead and launch a complaint. Meanwhile, I would like to advice you,don't leave studying because even if Pearson Decides in your favor and ask you to give again, you must have the same confidence level, and that comes with practice.

Hope this Helps

Vivek,

First I'd like to congratulate you on your huge score improvement. 450 to your actual score of 630 is very significant, so don't overlook this!

In terms of scoring lower on the actual day of the test. There are numerous factors that might have played a role besides the noise.

Was time management an issue? Test day jitters? Your verbal score on the actual test is a lot lower than your practice scores, did you struggle with any specific question types?

I would really go back and try to analyze what you struggled with besides external factors. From my experience, Pearson doesn't really allow retakes, unless the actual test administrator files a complaint on your behalf.

I would suggest taking a week or two to just relax. Sign up to re-take the test in a month's time. Sit down and really analyze potential weak areas, and came up with a good game plan to conquer those areas. Take a few more practice tests, making sure you are consistently scoring in the range you want.

Don't give up hope. When life throws you lemons, just make lemonade.

Thanks a lot everyone!

@Danaj,
I think I will pursue the Pearson Vue with this issue and see if there is any way I can turn them around.
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated :)

@sreak1089,
Now that I had to go through that condition on the test day, it really does make sense to do so. And would suggest the same to all fellow BTGites :)

@gmat740,
Thanks for your encouragement. I have started preparing again for the test but have not yet booked a date. I am following the BTG forums and learning a lot from here, something I had not done in my last round of preps. BTG rocks :)

@GMATBootcamp,
Thanks for showing me the brighter side of what happened. Actually after I read your reply I realised it really is a good score improvement :)
I had analysed my performance on the test day and realised some of the points as follows:

1. DS was a bit time consuming for me.
2. Because of the noise I had to re-read the wordy problems more than I usually did. And was losing time on that.
3. After the last GMATPrep test, I had a good confidence level, but because of disturbed concentration I was losing more than usual time on tougher problems and thus towards the 3rd quarter of the quants I had hit the panic button.
4. In verbal, I struggled with RC and CR but mainly because I had to re-read everything again and again and overall time management suffered due to this.
5. Just like quant towards the end of the test I had to rush in verbal too.

I would like to seek another bit of suggestion regarding my preparation strategy.I have bought the MGMAT Tests. I have started redoing verbal from the Kaplan Verbal Workbook and am finding it good so far. I will be doing CR from the PPrep LSAT CR Bible this week.
For quants I make it a point to practice atleast 20-25 PS and 25-30 DS everyday. Mainly from the 1000s series. Anything else you think would be a better practice material.
I have done the OG12 and OG11 about 2-3 times.

I am planning to take an appointment for october end. Will that be too late for me to take the test and meet application deadlines for universities. Basically I am looking for ISB hyderabad and any other school which has a one year full time program. Those being NUS, NTU, ISB, Manchester Univ etc.

Any other suggestion regarding my preparation strategy will be most welcomed.

Thanks,
Vivek
