(A) exicited
(B) it excited
(C) exciting
(D) would excite
(E) it had excited

What is wrong with Option D?

Hello!

This sentence correction question has to do with parallel structure. All of the action verbs need to match up in terms of format or tense. Let's look at the original sentence, but I'll put the action verbs in bold:

The end of the eighteenth century saw the emergence of prize-stock breeding, with individual bulls and cows receiving awards, fetching unprecedented prices, and excited enormous interest whenever they were put on show.

As you can see, we have three actions: receiving, fetching, and excited. Since 2 out of 3 actions are -ing verbs, we must make the odd one out match and make it an -ing verb, too.

Therefore, C is the only option that makes all three actions parallel.
