here, where=whereas

between a and c, by supporting is better than in support of --because you know who "support".
let's beat GMAT.

IMO C..In support of -correct idiom
Where indicates place
While..is more like once upon a time ;-)

I too felt where refers to place and 'by supporting' dint fit in when followed by 'after 1897'. IMO C can any body please explain

I too felt where refers to place and 'by supporting' dint fit in when followed by 'after 1897'. IMO C can any body please explain

Guys, Do we need " had" in the sentence ? As in the 2nd part of sentence we are using *after* , IMO usage of after makes clear the sequence of event in past isn't it?

Pls share thoughts!

Well both the events are in the past. So first one need to have a had..

Agree with you raama that both sentences are in PAST

what I meant was that in second sentence we are using *after*.

Where once the union had acquiesced to the prejudices of its English-speaking members by supporting the imposition of an alien tax on immigrant workers, after 1897 the United Mine Workers made a determined effort to enlist Italians and Slavs in its ranks

So IMO usage of after makes evident the sequence of events.

Thus usage of by Supporting is correct

(B) Where once the union acquiesced to it English-speaking members’ prejudice for the support of <- Incorrect use of "FOR SUPPORT OF"
