Taking the exam sick...

by Toph@GMAT_REBOOT » Thu Oct 02, 2008 10:12 am
I was wondering if anyone has experience taking the exam with a cold.

My exam is tomorrow. I didn't feel great at the beginning of the week. The past two days I have felt worse. Part of me wants to push through the exam tomorrow as long as I don't feel any worse. The other part of me things maybe I should reschedule if I still feel sick tomorrow morning.

I think I now my stuff, but I don't really want to score 40-50 points below what I'm capable of because I'm not thinking straight and go through the exam too slowly.

Thank you for any advice in advance.

If you are not in a rush to complete your GMAT, and if you think you can afford to lose $250--then I would consider waiting until you are well.

I'm personally biased because when I took the SATs as a younger person, I was sick and the results were not pretty. My two cents though. If you feel like you are prepared and are confident in your prep, then you may be ready to perform regardless of health.

Good luck, please let us know what you decided!

I just took the exam today with a cold...not a good experience at all. I scored almost 80 points lower than I was consistently achieving on practice tests.

The hardest part was having to re-read the questions because they wouldn't sink in the first time...

Thank you both for your responses.

I tried to interpret my becoming sick as God telling me that I knew what I need to know and that I should relax instead of stressing out the two days before the exam. On Friday, I woke up felt a lot better. I took that as a good sign. Then, I read some news that may be very good for some former co-workers that I had been praying for during the week leading up to the exam. Those events combined to give me some much-needed confidence and a general good feeling. I don't think I would've felt the way I did during the exam without my week turning out the way it did.

Anyways, with the aforementioned confidence and good feeling with me in the testing center, I took my exam and nailed it with a 790 (Q:51, V: 48). I am curious to see my AWA scores. I didn't finish proofreading either of my essays.

Thank you to everyone on this forum. I'd especially like to thank you, Eric, for posting the flashcards (I think the only study material I looked at on exam day, although I may have glanced at OG) and all of the other resources (especially some of the SC notes).

Are you going to retake, Ninja?
