The questions asks for the number of pairs where the product of the two numbers in the pair is negative. Also, the pair is chosen such that the two
numbers are consecutive in the given series.
So the various pairs are
(1,-3); (-3,2); (2,5); (5,-4); (-4,-6)
Now if take the product of the pairs and we have the pairs
(1,-3); (-3,2); (5,-4), which give negative product.
Let me know if this helps.
