Random questions...

by beny » Fri Aug 24, 2007 10:37 am
Hi Amy,

Two questions:

1. You mentioned in another thread that this year is exceptionally competitive -- in what sense? In that the sheer number of applicants is larger (I know this is true), or that the quality of applications is higher (how do you measure this)?

2. How does HBS view reapplicants? I heard that HBS is particularly harsh on reapplicants; due to the nature of the ultracompetitive year, and if a candidate has the chance to futher develop his profile in the next year, would it be wise to develop a stronger profile before applying? (I heard that the level of competition is usually cyclical... applications numbers could likely be down in the coming years.) Or would it not hurt to still apply this year, and reapply if dinged?

Thanks!

Hi beny,

1. This article may give you more detail: https://www.businessweek.com/bschools/co ... 302636.htm

2006 recruiting was quite good, and when there is a strong market for MBAs there tend to be increased applications. With the Millennials entering the pool, there are just more people in the right demo - remember how competitive college applications became about 10 years ago? I think this trend will continue for the next several years, especially if the economy starts declining a bit.

2. I don't think HBS is as harsh on reapplicants as is generally mythologized. HBS' admissions process is notoriously opaque, so I think they simply do not welcome reapplicants with open arms the way Wharton does, for instance. I believe reapplicants are evaluated on the same terms as anyone else. If you are ready to apply, want to attend in the fall and are interested in HBS - go for it. There are never guarantees with a school as competitive as HBS or other top 10 schools.

Good luck!

Thanks, I've previously read that article, which is what prompted my question. 8)

I just wanted to verify that it was strictly quantity of applicants that is going up as opposed to quality (and if it is quality, how would the quality of applications be measured and how has it been increasing). I suppose that with increased quantity, it would be a uniform increase (there will be an equal increase in the number of quality-applications as in the number of sub-quality applications). From that point of view, I suppose I understand... If there were a trend towards a higher proportion of quality to sub-quality applications, however, I'd be interested in an explanation.

Hi beny,

I think it's impossible to really know about the quality question at this point in the process - round one deadlines haven't even closed.

Good luck!

Hi Amy,

Thanks for your answer. As long as there is not yet concrete evidence that the quality of apps are going up, I am happy. :)
