SC 1000 - 843 & 844 - clumsy questions !!

843). The use of chemical pesticides in this country is equally extensive or more so than ten years ago. (A) equally extensive or more so than ten years ago

(B) equal to or more extensive than ten years ago

(C) as extensive as ten years ago or more

(D) equal to, if not more, than ten years ago

(E) as extensive as it was ten years ago, if not more so

IS ANY ANS CORRECT...I find all awkward

I] Only E is correct in comparison..

II] Hopefully is not a word from GMATLAND.. so if you see this word.. remove the sentences using this word..
leaves us with only two choices.. b and e.. b is the best.. coz E uses such as.. that's incorrect.

I agree tht in 843 out of all only E is correct...but what about the usage

as extensive as it was ten years ago, if not more so

is this kind of usgae correct ??

I am sorry..but I am not finding anything wrong with that sentence.. what is ur perspective in terms of trouble point in this sentence? share that..

If you are trying to learn grammar, this forum is probably not the right place. I gave up and looked for other resources and so should you.

Here "so" is used in a particular fashion which is called clausal substitution. The same has been done in "if not more so".
Example : My office is as big as yours, if not more so.

Now coming back to the original sentence. Without the clausal substitution, the sentence should read as given below:

The use of chemical pesticides in this country is as extensive as it was ten years ago, if not more extensive than it was ten years ago.

Hopefully is always wrong agreed, but in the given sentence hopefully is not even underlined, so we should take it that it should stand.

1 would go for C

Scoobydooby... choice A is always the highlighted portion.. here nittinj has by mistake not highlighted it in the main sentence..
