DS Practice test question #1

by missionmba » Mon Aug 04, 2008 5:02 am
Representation in a local community board is based on the community’s population, with 25 board members representing the first 500,000 people, and each additional board member representing an additional 30,000 people. Is the population of the town less than 500,000?

(1) There were 23 members on the community board.
(2) If the population were three times as large, the community board would have had 51 members.

Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.

Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.

BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.

Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT SUFFICIENT

IMO: D

stem1 states 23 members exist. From the original sentence, you can assume that if the board members are < 25, population is also < 500,000. Thus, stem 1 SUFFICIENT

if population is 3x now then ---> 51 board members.

Figure out the # of people:

1. 51 - 25 = 26 additional members
2. 500,000 + (30,000 x 26) = 1,280,000/3 = 426,666 ----> less than 500,000 SUFFICIENT.

therefore, D.

What's the OA?

why is not possible that out of the 25 board menbers, representin 50,000 ppl, 2 are thr for administrative purpose only (just an example) and dont represent any group therefore actually 23 people of the board represent the 50,000 ppl?

well i too picked D but this was a doubt that i had during the prep test.
