Advertisement: For sinus pain, three out of four hospitals give their patients Novex. So when you want the most effective painkiller for sinus pain, Novex is the one to choose.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously undermines the advertisement's argument?

A] Some competing brands of painkillers are intended to reduce other kinds of pain in addition to sinus pain.

B] Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex will do so for those patients who cannot tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use.

C] Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their products to hospitals by selling these products to the hospitals at the lowest price the manufacturers can afford.

D] Unlike some competing brands of painkillers, Novex is available from pharmacies without a doctor's prescription.

E] In clinical trials Novex has been found to be more effective than competing brands of painkillers that have been on the market longer than Novex.

The OA is C.

I am confused between the options B and C.

Option A: out of scope and so does not affect the argument at all. We are not concerned with healing of other types pains.

Option B: This statement actually means that Novex is used as a substitute by many hospitals when some regularly used medicine that is a competitor of Novex cannot be used on the patients.
That means that Novex is not regularly demanded in the market i.e the hospitals. Hence it is not that effective. Because if it was the most effective then hospitals would have used it upfront and not as a backup option when other medicines do not work...

Option C: Definitely weakens the argument. It says that the drug manufacturers sell these products to the hospitals at the lowest prices that is possible. That means there is no demand for these medicines, its just that the drug manufacturers are selling it at the lowest prices.

Option D: We are not concerned about the availability of the drug. So out of scope.

Option E: Strengthens the argument. It says that Novex is better than other competing brands.

Confused between B and C.

Please help... as both the options kind of weaken the stimulus...

A. The sentence is not Concerned about the other Competitive Brands.
B. This obtion is talking about the harshness of the medicine which is irrelevent.
C. Since it is available at a lower price, the hospitals can refer the same to the patients. So it can be a different reason for the medicine to be known.
D. It talks about the availability of the medicine and not the effectiveness of it.
E. This actually support the argument.

So, its 'C'

GMAT Instructor to suggest.

premise - 3 out of 4 hospitals use Novex. conclusion -novex is the most effective drug.
question asks to weaken the argument.

So, we need the answer choice that will reveal that the matter of using this Novex is not in its effectivness, but in something else.

answer choice C shows us that the matter is in Novex being cheap.

as far as I understand answer choice B strengthens the argument. it states that since other drugs cant help, Novex is used.

B] Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex will do so for those patients who cannot tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use.

C] Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their products to hospitals by selling these products to the hospitals at the lowest price the manufacturers can afford.

Situation: 75% of times hospital is giving Novex. this thing is taken for the effectiveness of NOvex.
to undermine this we need something that extends the idea of hospitals giving Novex in such a way that it cant be concluded Novex is effective.

C provides the link saying hospitals use Novex because its somewhat profitable for the hospitals to use Novex.

B somehow strengthens the conclusion that Novex is effective in that it can be used for patients who cant tolerate usually used drugs hence pointing out that it is more efficient/ usable compared to other drugs and hence is effective.

Hence C

I think the biggest problem with B is that it doesn't necessarily hurt the idea that Novex is the most effective. It very well could be, but hospitals might normally use other painkillers for a variety of reasons (cost, availability, etc.)

Expert HELP!
It can very well be that the drugs other than Novex are very cheap than NOVEX.
Option "C" doesn't COMPARE relative cost. It merely says that NOVEX is cheap.
IMO:B

That could indeed be the case. Maybe other things are even cheaper than Novex, and hospitals are paying more for it because it is more expensive. However, one of the classic ways to ways to weaken an argument is to provide an alternative explanation to what is proposed. Here, the argument is that since the majority of hospitals use Novex, it must be the most effective. C provides information that adds some doubt: well, what if it's not because it's the best but because it's the cheapest? That directly harms the "most used"--->"most effective" argument.

On a Weaken question, you'll almost never have a 100% answer...an answer that completely destroys the original argument. You're simply bringing the argument into question.

B does not hurt the argument. Novex is used as a backup option for people who can't tolerate the painkiller the hospital would regularly use, but that could be for a variety of reasons not related to effectiveness.
